SQL Functions enable customers to improved productivity, performance, enable cross platform porting, and encapsulate application logic in the database. Db2 for z/OS supports Built in Functions that Aggregate data, operate on scalar data, as well as materialize data as a table. Db2 also enables customers to create functions to in Host languages (such as COBOL or C/C++) or in SQL PL (The ANSI compatible SQL Procedures Language). Finally, Db2 13 also introduced SQL Data Insights which allows easy, function based AI, to be applied to customer data. Db2 has embraced this with the introduction of a new datalake table type, which allows Db2 table data to be stored outside of the database, using these open formats. In this session, you’ll learn more about datalake tables, including use cases, benefits, and how to create and work with them. Additionally, you’ll see how this and other new capabilities allow Db2 to tightly integrate with watsonx.data, IBM’s hybrid, open data lakehouse platform. IBM Db2 has introduced several AI features in recent years. These features fall into two categories: AI for database and database for AI. In the first category, Db2 has AI models in the database to optimize database operations. A key example is the AI query optimizer GA’d in v12. In the second category, Db2 has integrated machine learning algorithms into the database for users' AI use cases. It provides over 200 in-database AI stored procedures that allow users to develop and run ML pipelines within the database. Db2 also supports Python and R UDFs, enabling users to use their external Python and R models from Db2. These AI features improve database operations and simplify enterprise AI workflows. This session will explore Db2’s AI features from both categories and show how you can use them in developing modern data-driven applications and enterprise workloads.

IBM Db2 offers a wide range of AI features, both built-in and external tools, for creating AI systems and solutions. These include over 200 built-in AI stored procedures and tools that work seamlessly with open-source AI ecosystems. In this workshop, participants will explore Db2’s AI support and use a selection of these features to implement practical AI models. The workshop consists of two parts. In the first module, participants will learn how to develop a supervised AI model using Db2’s built-in AI stored procedures. The entire model development and usage will be done using SQL within the database. In the second module, participants will learn how to create a Python model using popular Python packages outside of the database, and then deploy that model back into a Db2 database. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained fundamental skills and hands-on experience in utilizing these AI capabilities. They will be able to apply these skills to their future AI projects. This workshop is designed to be beginner-friendly and does not require participants to have extensive knowledge in AI. Basic SQL skills and some Python programming skills are sufficient for attending and benefiting from this workshop. Notes: the maximum number of attendees at the workshop will be 30. In this lab, you’ll experience how easy it is to create new datalake tables in Db2, including Iceberg and non-Iceberg tables, using open data formats like ORC and Parquet on object storage. Additionally, you’ll see how datalake tables created in Db2 can be shared directly with the watsonx.data open data lakehouse (and vice-versa) and how data and workloads can be offloaded from the enterprise data warehouse onto a lower-cost data platform. This means that workloads using this data can run wherever it makes the most sense – either through watsonx.data or through Db2’s own native query engine (or even other query engines that support these open formats). This flexibility allows you to optimize your AI and analytics workloads by selecting the right engine, for the right workload, at the right cost.

The use of object storage and open data and table formats, like Parquet, ORC, and Iceberg, are becoming common place in data management. Db2 has embraced this with the introduction of a new datalake table type, which allows Db2 table data to be stored outside of the database, using these open formats. In this session, you’ll learn more about datalake tables, including use cases, benefits, and how to create and work with them. Additionally, you’ll see how this and other new capabilities allow Db2 to tightly integrate with watsonx.data, IBM’s hybrid, open data lakehouse platform. The data lakehouse is the latest architecture in the evolution of data management, but rather than a replacement for enterprise data warehouses, the data lakehouse is poised to bring value by augmenting and optimizing them.

IBM Db2 has introduced several AI features in recent years. These features fall into two categories: AI for database and database for AI. In the first category, Db2 has AI models in the database to optimize database operations. A key example is the AI query optimizer GA’d in v12. In the second category, Db2 has integrated machine learning algorithms into the database for users' AI use cases. It provides over 200 in-database AI stored procedures that allow users to develop and run ML pipelines within the database. Db2 also supports Python and R UDFs, enabling users to use their external Python and R models from Db2. These AI features improve database operations and simplify enterprise AI workflows. This session will explore Db2’s AI features from both categories and show how you can use them in developing modern data-driven applications and enterprise workloads.
